One of the main aims of Planet Picture Book is to discover authentic picture books, ideally by authors and illustrators based in their country of origin. But, despite extensive searching I haven’t found a single one translated into English. Not one.
So I have settled on a compromise by selecting three beautiful picture books set in Morocco. With each one, I genuinely felt I was experiencing a culture and place far from home. I hope you do, too.
The Butter Man by Elizabeth Alalou and Ali Alalou, illustrated by Julie Klear Essakalli (Charlesbridge, 2008)
Mirror by Jeannie Baker (Walker Books Ltd, 2010)
The Storyteller by Evan Turk (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2016)
Do you know of any contemporary picture books by Moroccan authors that have been translated into English? If so, please drop me a line in the comments section. I’d love to hear from you![Image: Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca, Morocco. Source: Canva]
